Lyrics of "Have Some Madeira, M'Dear"
She was young, she was pure, she was new, she was nice,
She was fair, she was sweet seventeen.
He was old, he was vile, and no stranger to vice,
He was bad, he was base, he was mean.
He had slyly inveigled her up to his flat,
To view his collection of stamps, (all unperforated),
And he said as he hastened to put out the cat.
The wine, his cigar and the lamps.
Have some madeira, m'dear,
You really have nothing to fear

MADEIRA – A Floating Emerald Madeira's exuberant landscape stands out as its most precious treasure, evoking the image of a floating emerald.
A green dot in the vast blue of the Atlantic, Madeira seems like a precious emerald afloat. Roughly 500 sea miles from the Portuguese mainland this picturesque island reveals an overwhelming landscape: magnificent, almost dramatic, and yet exerting a somewhat bucolic charm. Lush vegetation covers the terraced hillsides, a natural paradise where Europe blends with the tropics. Not in vain was it baptized "Madeira", meaning "timber", since the first settlers had to set fire to the virgin forest to penetrate.
History ascribes the discovery of this archipelago consisting of two larger isles, Madeira and Porto Santo, and the smaller, uninhabited Desertas Islands, to the seafarers
João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira, who landed there in 1418. This event was to become an important milestone on the threshold of the Golden Age of the Discoveries, when under the command of Prince Henry "The Navigator", the Portuguese sailors set out for their historic mission.
